Bristol-based Horstmann Controls has entered a new phase in its strategic plan through its continued investment in the latest moulding machine technology, in the form of an additional ARBURG 100 tonne machine fitted the integrated MULTILIFT H robot and the ‘advance’ energy saving hybrid drive package. Having recently completed over a century of operation, the in-house moulder seeks to enhance its lead in the field of electricity utility products to high profile customers such as Eastern Electricity, e-on and British Gas and a vast array of smaller, independent clients.
Kevin Milverton, Operations Engineering Manager for the firm commented on the latest acquisitions: “We manufacture a wide range of high-tolerance products from engineering plastics, on nine ARBURGs, running a massive 200 mould tools. “Our philosophy is lean manufacturing, operating short runs with rapid tool changes. Our moulding machines are exclusively from the ARBURG stable – we bought our first ARBURG in 1983, with our replacement programme commencing 19 years later.
“The new machines are delivering efficiency savings of between seven and ten per cent, with rapid set up times due to the incredibly user-friendly SELOGICA control system and robot functionality. For example, our setters now have to attend to the machines every 15 minutes, against previously every two. The robot arm has the added bonus of improving the finish of cosmetic parts. The ‘Advance Technology’ ARBURG system and the electric screw motor fitted on the machines reduces energy consumption across the plant. We continue to invest in the ARBURG brand because of its consistent reputation for reliability and their exceptional level of after sales service. This is an essential requirement when operating in a ‘lean’ environment.”
Kevin concluded: “Although this business was started over 100 years ago, we continue to grow. Our current turnover is £12 million, five per cent over the same period in 2007 and we now employ over 160 staff.”
